Brian Flaspohler is a baseball historian who claims that the first professional game of baseball in St. Louis took place on May 4, 1875. St. Louis lost but won. The St. Louis Brown Stockings defeated the St. Louis Red Stockings 15 to 9. Out-of-town ringers were needed to create the first professional St. Louis ball club. These ringers created the Brown Stockings. The Red Stockings were an amateur team of amateur and unprofessional baseball players. The Red Stockings were disappointed to learn that no St. Louis player made it into the first professional baseball team. Flaspohler stated that the Cardinals would still exist. They weren’t the first major league team to visit St. Louis.
